Outlining work over summer, gathering learning resources

With isolation and quarantining, and now that hand in is over, I’ve got lots of time to pursue work for myself. From my experience with process books and working with layout, and the relation with type and image, I’ve identified this as an area I’d like become more fluent in.

I have a bank of scans which I used for my Kingston summer project, taken from old books. I plan on pairing these images with the type of my ai generated poetry. I was recently shown this work by a practising designer. The type set around a circular path reminds me of constructivist graphics. I would like to approach type setting slightly more fluidly and experiment with more dogmatic styles.

Following my meeting with Joel I’m also learning some coding using the resource:

I’ll try and do this daily.

I was lucky enough to take out this book from the library before it closed.

It features essays from my favourite designer April Grieman so I look forward to reading this. I will use this log to note any references or links. I read some criticism about the book before going in:

I also asked Marcus about some theory to pursue. He gave me the names Mc Cluen and his intro to media, “Gutenberg Bible”, example black lettering. Also mentinoed Discourse theory and Foucault, “Gramophone, film, typewriter” a novel by Friedrich Kittler, Bbernard Stiegler to read around – interviews etc, the term “automatic society” and in response to that “Yuk Hui”. The Question Concerning Technology, a book by Martin Heidegger, term “cosmotechnics”. I will ask Ajay if he has any further reading and research links on media theory as well as general design history,

I watched an interesting designer profile and managed to sit in on a private Q and A session;

Outside of graphics I will look film, art – art history and documentaries, sketching and painting, illustration.
